The Nutrient Pollution

It is the most widespread form of water pollution. The mechanisms that cause Eutrophication add excessive amounts of nutrients to our lakes, streams and oceans — driven primarily by human inputs. The overly enriched water causes plants and algae to die and decompose resulting in oxygen depletion and fish kills.

 

Every year over 20 million metric tonnes of phosphorus and nitrogen leak to the environment from farmlands, factories and cities. Nutrient pollution at this scale causes harmful algal blooms in our waterways resulting in toxic conditions for humans and dead-zones where no aquatic life can survive.

At the same time, untreated human waste and unsafe sanitation practices in developing countries cost more than half a million human lives and over $200B annually. Over 90% of waste in developing nations is discharged to waterways untreated.

Nutrient recovery and reuse

By capturing excess nutrients for reuse at point and nonpoint sources, wastewater flow from drainage, manure, sewage, water treatment facilities and mines could be returned to phosphorus-deficient soils; decreasing food production costs while creating a circular economy based on reusable fertilizer alternatives developed from waste streams.

Recognizing the precious value of these waste resources, capturing them before they reach critical waterways, and recycling them back to farmlands as fertilizer is the only sustainable and economical solution going forward.
